Developmental Social/Emotional Stages Through the Years...
As kids grow, it is important to know and have a sense of what is normative as compared to other children at that particular age. With that being said, all kids do not develop at the same pace; some may reach certain stages earlier than others and some may reach certain stages much later. However, it is still important as a parent or teacher to know what is within the normal range of social and emotional behaviors of a child/adolescent before worrying or setting off the fire alarm. :)
There is a rich resource called Great Schools and their website contains many school and parent related articles; it is www.greatschools.org and some of the links below are directly from this resource. Other information is summarized and compiled by myself and Denise Rousso, the School Counselor from St. Anne and St. John. The information is from researching developmental milestones of children. Louise Bates Ames has written many books on specific age groups and I highly recommend her books. Yardsticks by Chip Wood is also a very good child development resource. Because many of us don't have the time or energy to read countless books, we wanted to provide the resources for you in a succinct fashion. Below is information on the social/emotional stages of children. Kindergarten through 8th grade are featured below.
