May/June 2012-Parenting Styles
There are four main parenting styles; permissive, authoritarian, authoritative and hands off. Permissive style allows the parent's desire for the child to be happy to take over, despite consequences. This is a challenge to maintain as a parent and the child may end up feeling entitled, and not challenged. Authoritarian style is usually a "My way or the highway" mentality. It is more like a dictatorship than a parenting relationship. Hands-off is where the child is pretty much left to their own devices-supervision is lacking and there is a lack of concern on the parent's end. Authoritative is where there is structure, limit-setting and caring. Discipline is about teaching and guidance. Which style are you? If you have a spouse, which style is he/she? Check out this quiz to see what type of parent you are.
